Getting A Great Deal on A New Television |
 |
With all the talk about "HD" and "all-digital," it's tempting to buy a new TV. Until, that is, you start looking at price tags--some of these sets cost as much as a small car. But you can get an great deal. As always, the key is to buy what you need, not what some salesperson insists you need.
The easiest way to get a great deal is to buy a TV that is properly sized for your space, instead of that monster they want to sell you. A good rule to remember is "double the diagonal." Take the size of the screen (which is measured on the diagonal), and double it. That's how far you have to sit from the TV; closer, and you will shift your eyes constantly to see the screen; you'll do this without even knowing about it, but you'll know about the headache it gives you. Also, you'll see the individual lines and pixels, ruining the experience.
Since most people don't sit more than 6 to 8 feet from their TV, the 30" to 42" screens are all that you need to consider. If you do have a larger room, use the "double the diagonal" rule to find the best size for you.
Flat panels come in two flavors: plasma and LCD. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Plasma screens give blacker blacks, can be viewed at more angles. LCDs use less power, support higher resolution and will last about three times longer than a plasma. Plasmas can be a better deal, with lower prices, but LCDs are becoming increasingly competitive, making this primarily an issue of preference. Test drive both before you buy.
Whichever you choose, by buying a TV that is properly sized for your space, you will get not only the optimal viewing experience, but also the best deal.
